GAA Relays Cancelled

The 2023 edition of Grenada’s national relay meet has been canceled by organizers, the Grenada Athletics Association (GAA). The GAA Relays, successor to the KFC Relay Meet was previously scheduled for May 6th, 2023, and was set to be the first of two major track & field meets carded for the month of May. In a communique shared with affiliates on Friday, April 28th, the Association conveyed regret over the cancellation of the event and stated,

“This cancellation has become necessary due to the limited time remaining for the organization of this year’s Whitsuntide Games which is expected to see participation from a large number of athletes, both local and regional.”

The expected increase in participation at Whitsuntide Games 2023 comes as Grenada also hosts the North American, Central American & Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) Combined Events Championships over the Whitsuntide Weekend, May 27th-28th 2023. This will be Grenada's first-ever staging of the NACAC Combined Events Championships which will run concurrently with Whitsuntide Games 2023.

With such high-profile events taking place over the Whitsuntide weekend, the Association seems to have directed all resources and attention toward ensuring the success of the Whitsuntide Games. Though this comes at the expense of the GAA Relays, the cancellation offers a few more weeks of preparation for clubs heading to the Whitsuntide Games on May 27th & 28th 2023.
